I agree that common tags would really be a great step forward in bringing it all together.
Back in the early days of blogging, there was talk of some sort of tagging system (universal) where people could categorize their content & I think people were more resistant to that idea than they are to tagging pix.
KPBS is a public TV station in San Diego, California providing live coverage of the fires using Google Maps, Twitter & Flickr!

Mindtouch, also based in San Diego has created a wiki page compiling existing resources covering the fire such as Twitter and recent headlines. Anyone can contribute by adding videos, photos, links, etc.
